Duck Life Cycle
Hi mamas,
Spring in The Little Red Schoolhouse is filled with life cycle projects and learning all about farm animals!
Listen in to hear what our Pre-K friends think of touching our duckling eggs inside the incubator.
Our friends learned that our baby ducklings won’t hatch unless they maintain a constant internal temperature of 99.5° as well as a humid environment in the incubator, “just like when we take a bath or shower”!
This temp. must be consistent throughout our 30–32 day life cycle project in order to have hatchling success!
Classroom Learning - Dipping Eggs
Hi mamas,
Listen in to hear our 2-3 grade students share their learning from their duck journals. ❤️🐣🦆📝
Learn about the uropygial gland and how it works to help ducks stay dry and warm, even in the coldest water! ❤️🐣🦆📝
???
Hi mamas,
Listen in to hear our kinder & 1st grade learners bring the world of wild ducks to life, acting out the vital role of a mama duck with curiosity and care!
From gently removing eggs from the incubator and dipping them in warm water to re-create the heat, moisture, and constant turning that is needed for healthy embryo development, our classroom was transformed into a living lab of discovery!
As they explored how mama ducks nurture their eggs with warm, damp feathers to create the proper humidity level, students also connected these lessons to the wider world… learning about other waterfowl, like swans and geese, and even discovering (through Luckey’s pants) how camouflage helps protect ducks in the wild!
Through science and imagination, these young scientists built meaningful connections that made nature’s wonders feel real and unforgettable!
Setting Up Duck Brooder
Hi mamas,
The moment we’ve been waiting for… our ducklings are hatching!
Come set up my duckling brooder with me!
I set up a warm and safe brooder using pine shavings, a cozy hutch, duckling starter feed, and a 250-watt heat lamp to keep our new arrivals comfortable in their first home.
Students learned about the pip—the very first crack made with an egg tooth—and got to witness one duckling begin its journey out of the shell.
Learning comes to life in moments like these!
Make Way For Ducklings
Hi mamas,
Our students are joyfully immersed in learning as they write in their duck journals and read stories to our baby ducklings.
Watching them observe, gently hold, and care for these new little lives has brought a special kind of warmth and excitement into our classroom.
Why Ducks Don’t Get Wet
Hi mamas,
Learning about ducks has never been more fun!
Students worked in their duck journals and conducted a science experiment using oil and water to understand why ducks don’t get wet.
By acting as mama ducks and using “preen oil,” they explored how the uropygial gland keeps feathers dry and protected.
Moments like these make learning unforgettable!
???
Hi mamas,
Our first graders are diving into hands-on duck learning!
Students examined an empty duck egg (with a very distinct smell) and documented the growth of their embryos.
They also got to pet a baby chick—feeling its tiny beak and slippery webbed feet!
From learning how webbed feet help ducks swim to discovering that their “bill” and lamellae help them catch and eat food, these moments bring science to life!

Hi mamas,
Our kindergarteners are learning how to care for baby ducklings!
From counting while they drink water to gently holding them with “caring hands,” students are learning responsibility that builds confidence in caring for their little duckling flock.
They explored how ducklings feel—from their hard beaks to their scratchy webbed feet—bringing learning to life!
Moments like these make learning so special!
Ducks First Bath
Hi mamas,
Duckling’s first bath time is such a special learning moment!
Students observed how ducks stay dry as water rolls off their feathers, and enjoyed reading and learning fun facts along the way!
Moments like these make learning unforgettable!
The 5 Little Ducks Story Time
Hi mamas,
Story time was extra special today with The 5 Little Ducks read aloud and sing along!
Students made text-to-self connections with our read aloud and our classroom ducklings. Little learners practiced number awareness and counting through our sing-along!
Hands-on learning that brings stories to life!
Ducks Tea Party
Hi mamas,
We couldn’t resist having a springtime tea party with our baby Cayuga ducklings!
From their chocolate brown fluffy feathers to their tiny black webbed feet and sweet little bills, these ducklings completely stole the show.
Sweet spring memories and hands-on learning all in one!
1st Grade Ducks Tea Party
Hi mamas,
A springtime tea party with baby Cayuga ducklings was simply too cute to resist!
These fluffy little ducklings captured everyone’s hearts with their chocolate brown down feathers, black webbed feet, and tiny black bills.
Sweet moments, meaningful learning, and memories our students will never forget!
That's what pre-K -8th grade learning looks like here in The Little Red Schoolhouse!
