Donkey and Pony Visit
Hi mamas,
Today we are introducing a very special guest, equine therapist Sophie Smith, along with her beautiful equine friends, Peter the donkey and Peppermint the pony!
Our pre-K friends will be exploring self-regulation and grounding techniques while learning how animals can help us feel calm, safe, and connected!
We are so excited to bring these hands-on experiences to life here at the Little Red Schoolhouse, where learning, confidence, and emotional connection grow in such meaningful ways!
Join us here on our backyard mini farm for lessons that last a lifetime, pre-K through 8th grade!
2nd-8th Grade Donkey & Pony Visit
Hi mamas,
Join us as our 2nd–8th grade students connect with Peter the donkey and Peppermint the pony through the mindful practice of breathing exercises and emotional learning.
Students practice emotional regulation through deep breathing to center themselves, bring oxygen to their brains, and calm their heart rates to better connect with our equine friends! This also helps horses and donkeys feel safe and relaxed.
Students share some of their horsemanship knowledge through topics such as precocial and epimeletic behavior, as well as grooming and learning to read a horse’s body language.
Through natural horsemanship, students learn that kindness and trust are the keys to working with horses!

Donkey & Classroom Learning 2nd-8th
Hi mamas,
Students are working in their donkey journals, learning all about how donkeys help people both physically and emotionally!
Students share their learning, writing, and hearts with us…
From discovering how these hard-working animals can carry heavy loads and work in rural areas to learning how their gentle and kind nature helps people and other animals feel safe and comforted!
We are learning that donkeys make great emotional support animals because they are intelligent, calm, and loyal. They can respond to human emotions and form strong bonds with both people and animals on the farm, as well as in therapeutic settings!
Introduction to Donkey & Pony Visit
Hi mamas,
As part of our Horse and Donkey curriculum, we are bringing a very special equine learning experience to the Schoolhouse with Peter the donkey and Peppermint the pony!
Through hands-on experiences, students will be exploring right-brain and left-brain learning, discovering how the right side of the brain focuses on “feelings” while the left side of the brain (the cerebrum side) focuses on “thinking”!
They will also explore how horses and donkeys process information differently and discover the role mirror neurons play in making these animals such powerful therapy partners!
Students will also practice self-regulation strategies as they learn how to navigate big feelings and build connections with our equine friends!
